RALEIGH – Southeast Raleigh is getting some much-needed income-restricted family apartments, but it will be awhile before residents can move in.
Affordable housing developer DHIC will soon break ground on its Fisher Grove project, a 166-apartment community at 401 Elders Grove Way. All units will be priced at or below 60% of area median income.
The community will comprise 56 one-bedroom units, 87 two bedrooms and 23 three-bedroom apartments among four buildings. Future residents will have access to 8,000-square-feet of retail space and small businesses, and possibly a healthcare provider.
Other amenities not often found in lower-income units will be in-unit laundry hookups, a computer center, fitness room and a playground.
Fisher Grove is the last phase of the Washington Terrace redevelopment. Residents with limited transportation will have plenty of transit access with nearby bus stops and the incoming New Bern Avenue Bus Transit line within walking distance.
Wake County has eight public schools within a 2-mile radius. WakeMed Hospital is on the bus stop route and a Food Lion-anchored shopping center is nearby.
Fisher Grove’s total cost is $49.5 million, with only $1.4 million from direct federal funds. The project was on hold until Wake County’s environmental review was completed.
