The National Black Leadership Southeastern Region has established a remarkable scholarship in honor of Mary Alice Thatch Jervay, a dedicated member and supporter of the National Black Leadership Caucus. As the esteemed editor of The Wilmington Journal, the oldest black publication in Wilmington and one of the oldest in the nation, Mary Alice Thatch left an indelible mark on our community. Her tireless efforts were instrumental in securing the Pardon of Innocence for the Wilmington 10, showcasing her unwavering commitment to justice and equality.
The Wilmington Journal has served as a powerful voice for our black community for over a century, and Mary Alice’s advocacy for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and her passionate work to uplift disadvantaged youth exemplify her legacy of empowerment. This scholarship stands as a testament to her inspiring contributions and a beacon of hope for future generations, encouraging them to pursue their dreams and continue the fight for equity and excellence in education.
The National Black Leadership Caucus is thrilled to celebrate the remarkable achievement of Alajiah Lynette Brunson, the deserving recipient of the $1000 essay scholarship! Her outstanding essay not only reflects the core mission of the Black Press but also pays homage to the inspiring legacy of Mary Alice Jervay Thatch.
Alajiah Brunson is the daughter of Shadonald Lacrisha Brunson, Granddaughter of Priscilla Harris, great-granddaughter of Donald Mapson, and great-great-granddaughter of Mrs. Nannie Mapson, and a graduate of New Hanover High School’s Class of 2025. Alijiah is poised to embark on an exciting academic journey at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University this fall.
The second-place $500 recipient is Mariah Hatcher, who is a graduate of Athens Drive Magnet High School Class of 2025. She is the daughter of Sheila Hatcher. Mariah will be attending Wake Technical Community College in the fall.
The third-place $250 recipient is Aniias Tyson, a graduate of John T. Hoggard High School Class of 2025. He is the son of Nikie Tyson, grandson of Wanda Tyson, and the great-grandson of the late Mary Ann Hooper Tyson. Annias will be attending NC State University in the fall, majoring in Agricultural Business.
The Mary Alice Jervay Thatch Educational Scholarship Award was presented at the Thomas and Willie Jervay Freedom Walkway in Wilmington, NC, named in tribute to the parents of Mary Alice Jervay Thatch.
