Durham, NC – Last month, North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Anita Earls was honored with the American Bar Association’s Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award. Recognized for her prolific career as a civil rights attorney, Justice Earls becomes just the second North Carolinian to receive the Margaret Brent award.
In her remarks, Justice Earls emphasized the importance of the rule of law and its fundamental role in our democracy:
“We are at a moment in history where it is incumbent on us to stand up, speak out, and be strong for the basic core values of our democracy and our system of justice. People’s lives depend on us. As women following in the footsteps of Margaret Brent and so many other bold female leaders, we cannot back down, put our heads in the sand, or shy away from the challenges. “

Since 1991, the American Bar Association’s Commission on Women in the Profession has honored up to five outstanding women lawyers who have achieved professional excellence and paved the way for other women in the legal profession.
Notable past honorees include Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, and Congresswoman Barbara Jordan.
Justice Anita Earls is the Senior Associate Justice on the North Carolina Supreme Court. Prior to taking office in 2019, she spent over 30 years as a civil rights attorney, specializing in voting rights, school desegregation, and employment discrimination matters. Throughout her career, she has championed government transparency, held large corporations accountable, fought for fair elections, and advocated for those who have been harmed. She lives in Durham with her husband, and she has two sons and three grandchildren.
