Listeners will feel a void as SiriusXM talk show host Joe Madison, “The Black Eagle,” lost his battle against prostate cancer on February 1, 2024.
A native of Dayton, Ohio, Madison began his radio career in 1980 at WXYZ-AM radio station in Detroit, and took his radio platforms to other locations in Philadelphia and Washington, DC, ultimately hosting the “Urban View” show on SiriusXM channel 126 for many years.
Known as “The Black Eagle” on his talk show, Madison engaged listeners on a variety of topics pertaining to civil rights, social justice, and the significance of voting rights. According to some accounts, Madison’s SiriusXM talk show had more than 26 million listeners since 2007.
Many mornings from 6-10 a.m. [the show is currently being re-broadcast] you would tune-in to hear him talking with such notables as Dick Gregory (one of his mentors), President Obama, Lonnie Bunch, and good friend Professor Henry Louis Gates, author and host of “Finding Your Roots”
At other times you could experience Madison’s down-to-earth, no-baloney personality, when he would let callers have a piece of his mind. When that happened, the sound of a cash register jingled in the background: he fined himself for using profanity, putting the money into a “Cuss Jar” that would go to humanitarian causes.
As Joe would say, “Sometimes you have to be profane to be profound!” He will be sorely missed.
